VERITAS Observations of X-ray Binaries
نویسنده
چکیده
X-ray binaries stand as the brightest Xray sources in the galaxy, showing both variable X-ray emission and extreme flares. Some of these systems have been recently discovered to be TeV gamma-ray emitters, with the high energy emission posited as resulting from particle acceleration in relativistic jets or from shocks between pulsar and stellar winds. VERITAS, an array of four 12m imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes has accrued more than 100 hours of observation time on X-ray binaries. Here we present the results of observations on 3A 1954+319, XTE J2012+381, 1A 0620-00, EXO 2030+375, KS 1947+300, SS 433, Cygnus X-1 and Cygnus X-3.

Observation of Galactic Gamma-ray Sources with VERITAS
We report on VERITAS observations at energies above 200 GeV of known or potential galactic γ-ray sources. The observed objects comprise pulsars, pulsar wind nebulae, high-mass X-ray binaries and gamma-ray sources with unknown counterparts in other wavelengths. Among the highlights are the observation of variable gamma-ray emission from the X-ray binary LS I +61 303 and the detection of MGRO J19...
متن کاملForty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملVERITAS observations of HESS J0632+057
HESS J0632+057 is one of only two unidentified high energy gamma-ray sources which appear to be point-like in nature. It is possibly associated with the massive star MWC 148 and has been suggested to resemble known TeV binary systems like LS I +61 303 or LS 5039. These binaries are rare and extreme (only three TeV binaries are known to date), and their gamma-ray emission mechanism has not been ...
متن کاملEvidence for long-term Gamma-ray and X-ray variability from the unidentified TeV source HESS J0632+057
HESS J0632+057 is one of only two unidentified very-high-energy gamma-ray sources which appear to be point-like within experimental resolution. It is possibly associated with the massive Be star MWC 148 and has been suggested to resemble known TeV binary systems like LS I +61 303 or LS 5039. HESS J0632+057 was observed by VERITAS for 31 hours in 2006, 2008 and 2009. During these observations, n...
متن کاملTeV Gamma-Ray Astrophysics
The window of TeV Gamma-Ray Astrophysics was opened less than two decades ago, when the Crab Nebula was detected for the first time. After several years of development, the technique used by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes like HESS, MAGIC or VERITAS, is now allowing to conduct sensitive observations in the TeV regime. Water Cherenkov instruments like Milagro are also providing the fir...
